I have a Dell Vostro that is giving the exact same issue. Were you having any other issues Joe before this occurred?
July 5th, 2010 7:39pm

My exact same issue started on July 3 with no previous problems at all. I'm experienced, done all the usual, stumped so far. Any further ideas would be appreciated. There have been some suggestions it is a result of a recent botched Windows Update 6/26/10 but I have not isolated that as yet as related.

I have the same error message and am running XP Home edition. My problem started July 4. I know at one point, I had to force the PC to shut down. I can't remember if that was before or after the error appeared. ThePC was running fine before the 4th and is always up-to-date with anti-virus software and Windows updates. Tried numerous spyware scans, virus scan, registry fixers with no luck and no real issues found. If I leave the error message alone, my PC functions fine except I cannot access the Microsoft Windows update site (even if I turn auto updates off and reboot).

Hitman pro found the threat and deleted. All is good thank you ChaosAlright, so I found a solution ^_^ At least for longisland94.Since this worked for him, you show try the same:Hitman Pro is a second opinion scanner, designed to rescue your computer from malware(viruses, trojans, rootkits, etc.) that have infected your computer despite all the securitymeasures you have taken (such as anti virus software, firewalls, etc.).http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanproHere ya go, try this and tell me the results. I want to know WHAT the file/program that it deleted was called and any OTHER info that it gives you. Just so that I can commit this to memory and/or get more data on it.ALSO, if this ends up working. To keep this from happening AGAIN, download ALL three of these programs. Unless you already have good, Spyware, Antivirus, and Malware programs.http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.phpThis will check for malware, AND registry key errors, or so most of the forums say. >.>http://superantispyware.com/You can download the free version and it will check for spyware as well.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/This is a free all in one program, but I still reccomend the other two.Young and Learning... Hitman Pro immediately found a possible varient of TDL3 (alias Alureon) rootkit detected, but it ended with the Blue Screen. From the message that starts with Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal it looks like atapi.sys might be missing.
July 6th, 2010 1:36am

Ok well, I have found an aswer that seems to work.Use the following trial software to delete the varient of TDL3 (alias Alureon) rootkit:Hitman Pro is a second opinion scanner, designed to rescue your computer from malware(viruses, trojans, rootkits, etc.) that have infected your computer despite all the securitymeasures you have taken (such as anti virus software, firewalls, etc.).http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanproNow if you end up getting the BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) like the below:bowen43 Typed:Hitman Pro immediately found a possible varient of TDL3 (alias Alureon) rootkit detected, but it ended with the Blue Screen. From the message that starts with Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal it looks like atapi.sys might be missing. Start your computer in safe mode with command prompt (Do this by tapping the f8 key repeatedly until a screen of options comes up and use your arrow key to select "Start in safe mode with command prompt.")Log into your account, and then when command prompt comes up type inexplorer.exeFind hitman pro, open it, have it run the scan and delete the Alureon varient. Hopefully this will work. If it doesn't, there are only THREE other options you can choose. Keep in mind that you may loose some files with this (Method 1). With Method 2 and 3 you WILL loose any and all files you have on your computer.Method 1:You can try booting to Last Known Good Configuration Mode, which could resolve this issue. To do this. Tap the f8 key repeatedly until a screen of options comes up and use your arrow key to select "Boot to last known good configuration."Method 2:Startup Repair (If your computer manufacturer has preinstalled recovery options, Startup Repair might also be installed on your hard disk. If your computer does not include Startup Repair, your computer manufacturer might have customized or replaced the tool. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.)ORUse your Windows XP startup disk and use the Recovery Panel located on the disk.Method 3:System Restore (Turn back time on your PC: Undo system changes with System Restore). In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue. ALSO, if this ends up working. To keep this from happening AGAIN, download ALL three of these programs. My PC is fixed! I contacted Hitman Pro regarding the blue screen and within half an hour they responded!!! They suggested I tryhttp://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip . I used that and it flagged tcpip.sys as being infected by TDSS Rootkit. Once resolved, I was able to use Hitman Pro, which identified a couple of minor issues (note: I tend to have a squeeky clean well protected PC, so that's quite an accomplishment). No need to run the additional software if Hitman Pro solved your issue. Just adding the link in case someone had the same problem I had. My guess is my problem may be unique and may have have been caused by me messing around most of the day trying to fix the orginal problem.Voted!

Hitman corrected this issue for me, however since then I've been unable to use my USB keyboard. Suspect that TDL3 (alias Alureon) was glommed to both mouse and keyboard drivers during infection (that's consistent with its behavior at the time). Mouse is working ok.I've tried several different keyboards. I can type via Remote Desktop. When I plug and unplug the keyboard (to any of several different USB ports ) I see the expected appearance/removal of the HID Keyboard entry under Device Manager. I can use the keyboard at BIOS and for F8 command at boot (Safe Mode), however KB doesn't work in Safe Mode either. The KB is definitely receiving power, however Caps-Num-Scrl Lock keys will NOT light up.I've run SFC /scanow to completion, no effect. I've re-applied SP3, no effect.I don't know if a command-line replacement of the keyboard driver would help - can't find detail on how to do that.Help me OWK you're my only hope.

Five me a secThere was another SFC "Fix" type of command.... I'll look it up. EDIT:No luck with that fix thing. Hey, got a question. You wouldn't happen to have an OLD keyboard, we're talking PRE USB, or one of those USB to (Whatever it's called) connectors.I've noticed that on current computers you don't need to install keyboards that run off the old style connector. Try this, I know it's a BASIC article, but why not?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258826 Also, is the legacy keyboard setting enabled in BIOS? If so turn it off.If not, turn it on.See if that doesn't work. I am having the same issue as the original poster. However, here is my issue. When I run Hitman it detects the Alureon and a few other minor threats. When I advance to remove I get a few windows error popups (explorer.exe and something else that I didn't catch), and Hitman asks to reboot to complete removal. At this point the computer locks up and can't complete rebooting.I was fine with this, as I was just going to boot to safe mode with command prompt. I did this, loaded explorer.exe, and opened Hitman. However, Hitman needs to connect to the internet, which is not possible, so how has anyone had any success with this route?Any suggestions are appreciated.
